“Again? Once wasn’t enough?”
that’s what my parents said when I told them that I wanted to leave for my second Erasmus. Well, once wasn’t enough for me and now that I’m about to leave again, I couldn’t agree more.
What doesn’t happen in a lifetime, can happen in a week (or in 5 months)
or at least, that’s what happened to me. You see the world, try new things, make new friends, fall in love, visit amazing places, discover other cultures – then it’s all over.
People always talk about leaving, but what about coming home?
Traveling changes you
Deeply. Completely. I don’t mean hair, weight, dress or anything else that has to do with appearance (though I must admit that I got my beer belly too), but your true self.
I started seeing the world through new eyes
but when I came back I felt like nothing had changed. The same old routine, same old friends (who have known you for years but perhaps don’t recognize you anymore) and your family (who truly and unconditionally loves you but who after a few weeks starts getting tired of listening to your Erasmus stories and how great that life was, hoping for you a future not that far from home). So, I decided to leave again. Not because my life at home wasn’t great, but because it wasn’t enough anymore.
Steve Jobs said “stay hungry, stay foolish”. I have no chance to write a better speech, but all I can say is: don’t be afraid to leave, to experience and above all to challenge yourself
The world is your oyster
the highs and lows you’ll live will only make you a better person.
You can see the change you wanted,
be what you want to be
and you get a head, a head full of dreams.
